Women's Empowerment through Sustainable Micro-finance: Rethinking 'Best Practice'

  Training Resources

Much of the material on this website is based on material written and compiled for a series of trainings on 'Sustainable Micro-finance for Women's Empowerment' for Pakistan Micro-finance Network (2004), gender trainers and practitioners and Taraqee Foundation (2005). Support for the training was provided by Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the Canadian International Development Agency through the Pakistan Social Institutions Development Program (SIDP). The trainings were coordinated and organized by Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan.

The precise aims of the trainings varied depending on participant group, but were:

  • to raise awareness and competence in gender analysis among micro-finance practitioners
  • to develop pratical action plans for designing an effective and sustainable gender policy adapted to the needs and structure of different organizations.
  • to adapt gender checklists which practitioners can use for future gender planning.
  • to develop skills in participatory methods with female and male clients which could be used for ongoing market research and assessment
  • to develop an international network for exchanging ideas about strategies for women’s empowerment through sustainable micro-finance.

To really get the most from the training, allowing sufficient time for reflection and discussion and produce a realisable Action Plan, requires 6 days with two field visits. Ideally this would be part of a participatory gender audit process. But the materials can be adapted for use in participatory conferences, shorter training courses with more modest aims and for general awareness-raising seminars.
